In Psalm 119:105, David prayed to God saying, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (New Living Translation). David had faith that God was always in front of him, leading, guiding and directing his steps so he wouldn’t stumble and fall or go off in the wrong direction. But did you know that just as God stands out in front to protect us, His protection is also behind us—forging a shield between us and our enemies? In Exodus 14:19-20, after God’s people were set free from the bondage of slavery, Pharaoh changed his mind and sent an army to bring them back to Egypt. As the children of Israel stood before the Red Sea, thinking they were trapped between a vast body of water and Pharaoh’s raging army, the Bible says, “Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel.” Suddenly, the cloud that had been leading God’s people moved from the front to the rear of them, and stood between God’s people and the army that was chasing them. Then, the Bible says, Moses obeyed God’s instruction and stretched out his staff that was in his hand, the Red Sea parted, and the Israelites walked through on dry land. When you come up against obstacles and don’t know how to handle them, trust God to bring you through to safety. He not only has your front covered—He’s also got your back!
