If you’ve ever noticed, at the beginning of any NFL game a referee tosses a coin after asking one of the team captains to choose heads or tails. The winner of the coin toss gets to choose whether his team will kick off or receive the football as the game begins. Though certain strategies are involved in choosing whether to kick or receive, one advantage to receiving is that team has an opportunity to score first. Obviously, the words heads and tails in this case refer to the two sides of the coin. But from a spiritual perspective, being at the head or the tail can refer to our position as believers. Deuteronomy 28:13 tells us: “And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath.” The New Living Translation says, “The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always be on top and never at the bottom.” Being on top is where every believer should desire to be because that’s where God, and all His blessings, can be found. But if we choose to not be there, then God won’t force it on us. In Deuteronomy 30:19, He says, “I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make.” The choice is ours—yours and mine! Either we can choose to live the blessed life God has planned and purposed for us, or we can settle for less than the best and likely live in hopelessness and despair. Clearly, God wants us to have the best. That’s why He ends that verse by saying, “Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” So that we don’t make the wrong choice, God even tells us which one to choose. How much plainer can He get? You should choose to have the best in everything—from your family to your relationships, from business to your bank account. Don’t settle for just being average because God has not made you to be average. You are His workmanship—an extraordinary person with extraordinary gifts and talents. See yourself as God sees you, blessed beyond measure with more than enough so that you can bless and give to others. Every day God gives you an opportunity to choose to be the head or the tail. Take your rightful position in Him at the top by choosing heads, so you can enjoy all that He has for you.
