Whether it’s during a sporting event, an individual competition, or, unfortunately, when we are with others who are gossiping or talking bad about someone, we’ve all been guilty of “talking trash.” We speak out insults like they’re nothing, never stopping to consider how they may be affecting the person or persons we’re talking to, or about. And we excuse it by saying that we’re “just joking,” or that it’s “all in fun.” Well, that’s not what God’s Word says about the words that should come out of our mouths. Ephesians 4:29, English Standard Version, tells us to “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” And Ephesians 5:4, New Living Translation, says, “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” Many would probably argue that they mean no harm when talking trash—that they’re “just fooling around.” But according to these scriptures, God doesn’t make provisions for “just fooling around.” In fact, Colossians 4:6, The Message, tells us, “Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.” It’s always good to have innocent fun in conversation, but never at the expense of someone else. The bottom line is talking trash is “out of place.” And it’s not pleasing to God. So, it’s best to not do it—period! When others around you start to “bad mouth” someone, or they invite you to join a conversation that is not wholesome or profitable, stop long enough to ask yourself: “Is what I’m about to say going to build up, or will it tear down?” Then, politely remove yourself from the conversation. Remember, God created with His words. Use your words to bless others.
