Sunday is Valentine’s day. It’s the one day each year when many make time to express their love for that special person who is dear to them. We say and do something special that communicates how much we love them. But let me ask you: Just how genuine is that love? By that I mean, is it the God-kind-of-love, or is it a superficial, worldly kind of love? In 1 John 2:15-17, The Message, the Bible says, “Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.” Can you see how foolish it is to go the way of the world—to deliberately disconnect from God just to hook up with something so unprofitable as the world? That last verse says the world will eventually pass away. That means whatever you put your trust in will go down the drain and eventually come to an end. On the other hand, it says “whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.” We may think we have true love, but the truth is, for many their love is a superficial kind of human love that’s conditional; one that only wants to love what is lovable and will only love when they are loved. They have never experienced God’s unconditional love—the kind of love that doesn’t ask for anything in return. The Bible says God loved us first (1 John 4:19), even before we existed. And because He loved us, we should love Him, and each another with the God-kind-of-love. That’s true love. Make sure you love like God loves.
