Ever tried to explain something to someone and no matter how hard you tried they just didn’t seem to get it? They just didn’t understand. Instead, they tried to convince you otherwise. Eventually, you gave up, looked them straight in the eyes, and said, “Never mind!” Sometimes that happens when we, as believers, try to share the gospel with unbelievers. They already have their own thoughts and opinions, and no matter what we say, no matter how hard we try to get them to understand our point, we just can’t get through to them. They don’t understand why or how God could be so loving or kind, or that He could forgive their sin and make them brand new. Some people with that kind of mindset are simply naysayers—people who habitually express negative or pessimistic views. Others, however, are what the Bible refers to as natural-minded people who don’t understand spiritual things. First Corinthians 2:14 says, “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” When people seem to reject your attempts at sharing Jesus with them, it’s not necessarily because they don’t agree or that they’re against you. The devil has them blinded to the truth. They’re being used by him to try to discourage your faith, to keep you from being a witness for Jesus—or worse, take your focus off God and turn your attention to the world’s way of thinking. For the moment, you may have to tell them “Never mind.” But at the same time, you can trust God to give you another opportunity to share His love, mercy, and grace with them, and believe they will have “ears that hear and eyes that see” (Proverbs 20:12, The Message.) Saying “never mind” doesn’t have to mean you’re giving up. It simply means, “Not now.”
