As a child growing up, Sunday dinner in my parent’s home had its very own tradition. After blessing the food, we would always “pass the plates.” After one person at the table had served himself or herself from one particular dish, they would pass the plate on to the next person. That would continue until everyone at the table had received a portion of each dish that made up our dinner. No one at the dinner table ever worried selfishly that the food would run out before it reached them. They never had to think, I’d better get mine before it’s all gone! Sitting there at the table, everyone knew there was enough food to go around because my mother always saw to that. We knew that our time was coming—that eventually the plate would reach us and we could help ourselves to the food. In other words, there was enough to go around! Thinking on that reminds me of Hebrews 13:16, English Standard Version: “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” As a son or daughter of Almighty God, you have been given His Word, and it has led you into a blessed life filled with abundance. Now you’re seated at the table of abundant life, surrounded by people desperately seeking to have what you have. They are hungry to know God and the truth of His Word. As you are enjoying the blessings He has given you, God desires that you not keep them only for yourself but that you share what you have, the saving message of Jesus Christ, with others. Food may run out at the dinner table, but God’s Word is eternal. It will never run out. God just needs people like you and me to be willing to share it—to pass it around so others can be blessed. Philippians 2:4, says, “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Don’t horde the Word of God for yourself. Pass the plate by sharing God’s blessings with others, and don’t worry that you’ll run out. There’s always more where that came from!
