If you’ve ever played chess, then you know the object of the game is to checkmate the opponent. This occurs when the opponent’s king is in “check,” and there is no legal way to escape attack. In other words, it’s game over! Checkmate is exactly where the enemy is hoping to lure you, as a believer. He wants to back you into a corner by putting so much stress and pressure on you that you feel overwhelmed and can see no way out. You don’t give up because you want to, you call it quits because you think you have no choice—no recourse! Thankfully, that’s not how it works in the lives of believers. Sure, there are times when we feel trapped, that our backs are against the wall and we don’t see any way out. But with God as our Provider and Protector, we always have a way to escape. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, English Standard Version, we are reminded: “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” The Message says, “All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.” Life may sometimes feel like it’s a game of chess, where good strategy determines how far you advance. But life as a believer never puts you in jeopardy of being tricked or deceived so you end up trapped with no way out. There will be times when the devil will make a play on you. He’ll make a move hoping to box you in a corner so he can yell “Checkmate!” and you’ll tuck your tail and run. But if you’re playing by God’s rules, if you’re allowing His Holy Spirit to direct your every move, then you won’t get caught in “check.” Jesus calls us “world over-comers!” That means we don’t get caught in “check,” and we never hear the enemy say to us, “Checkmate.” Instead, we boldly proclaim “checkmate” to Satan and the world’s system. That’s the best move we can ever make!
